The University began as the Storrs Agricultural School through an act of the Connecticut General Assembly on April 21, 1881. That action stemmed from the philanthropy of two brothers ­­ Charles and Augustus Storrs, who donated land and money to establish a school for boys. In 1893, the General Assembly provided for the admission of women, changed the school to the Storrs Agricultural College, and designated it as Connecticut's land-grant college.
