The mission statement of Bridgewater State College was adopted in April, 1998. As the comprehensive public college of Southeastern Massachusetts, Bridgewater State College has a dual mission: to educate the residents of Southeastern Massachusetts and the Commonwealth, and to use its intellectual, scientific and technological resources to support and advance the economic and cultural life of the region and the state.
While maintaining its historic focus on the preparation of teachers, Bridgewater today provides a broad range of baccalaureate degree programs through its School of Arts and Sciences, its nationally recognized School of Education and Allied Studies, and its new School of Management and Aviation Science, which includes the only four-year Aviation program at a public college in New England. At the graduate level, the college offers doctoral programs in Educational Leadership and Reading in partnership with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Through the extensive information technology and distance education resources available at Bridgewater, including the unique John Joseph Moakley Center for Technological Applications, the college has made technology an integral component of teaching and learning on campus, and seeks to become the regional center for the enhancement of teaching through technology for PreK-12 teachers and college faculty.
Bridgewater educates its students to think critically, communicate effectively and act responsibly within a context of personal and professional ethics. Learning communities on campus and internships in the workplace help students sharpen skills and examine values. Outside the classroom, resident and commuting students alike benefit from participation in research projects, public and community service, and a wide range of recreational and cultural activities.

We emphasize instruction in small groups by highly-qualified staff committed to quality in teaching. Our smaller classes enable students to receive more individualised instruction and personal assistance with their work. The smaller student numbers provide more access to facilities for individual students.
We admit students on the basis of a comprehensive assessment, including tertiary entrance scores, school results, extracurricular activities, references, and more importantly, personal interviews. We have students who have come to study in Australia from over 60 countries making up approximately half of the student population. We have our own accredited English Language Institute (BUELI - Cricos Code 00666B) which provides preparatory English and other university preparatory courses.
We run three semesters each year, starting in January, May and September. It is thus possible for a six-semester program to be completed in two years and an eight-semester program in two years and eight months. A number of three-semester coursework Masters programs can be completed in twelve months.
We are very proud of the fact that our graduates are not only able to find work upon graduation but are actively sought after by a number of prestigious national and international employers and recruitment agencies.

The roots of the University of California go back to the gold rush days of 1849, when the drafters of the State Constitution, a group of vigorous and farsighted people, required the legislature to "encourage by all suitable means the promotion of intellectual, scientific, moral and agricultural improvement" of the people of California. California had few families in 1849 and few children to educate, but these early planners dreamed of a university which eventually, "if properly organized and conducted, would contribute even more than California's gold to the glory and happiness of advancing generations."
